Harold Baines
Outfielder, Designated Hitter.  Chicago White Sox, 1980-89, 1996-97, 2000-
Bats:  left.  Throws:  left.
Born:  3/15/59, Saint Michaels, Maryland.

 

  • 220 Sox home runs is second only to Frank Thomas.
  • 996 Sox runs batted in is second only to Luke Appling.
  • Holds club record for most rbi's in a single month, 36 in June, 1987.
  • Three-time Sox all-star (1986, 87, and 89), also selected twice as the American League's Designated Hitter of the Year,  1987 and 1988.
  • Amongst club leaders in extra base hits (second behind Luke Appling), doubles (third), total bases (third), and hits (fourth).
  • Clubbed at least 20 home runs seven different times for the Chicago White Sox.
  • Drove in the winning run to clinch the 1983 A.L. West Division championship, the city's first championship in twenty years.
  • Traded to Texas in 1989, and got his number retired by the Sox.  Returned to the club as a free agent in 1996 only to be traded again in 1997.  Selected to the 1999 all-star team as a member of the Baltimore Orioles.
  • First pick in the 1977 amateur draft, a hero amongst Sox fans through most of the 80's and 90's.  Sometimes referred to as "the hootchie cootchie DH", but mostly known for his smooth swing and easy demeanor, forever cheered by Sox fans to Nancy Faust's organ accompaniment, "Har-old! Har-old! Har-old!"
  • White Sox retired Harold's #3 in 1989, joining Frank Robinson and Phil Niekro as the only active players to ever have their number retired.  Sox unretired Harold's number upon his return in 1996.
  • Reacquired in July, 2000 for a third stint with the Chicago White Sox.  Unretire that #3 again, Sox Fans!  Har-old!  Harold!  Har-old!  Harold!  Har-old!  Har-old!  Harold!  Har-old!

    Chosen by Sox fans as the greatest hall of fame designated hitter.
