Pinch Hitter, Catcher.  Chicago White Sox, 1964-67.
Batted:  left.  Threw:  right.
Born:  4/6/27, Caroleen, North Carolina.  Died:  9/15/91.


  • Holds club record for most pinch hits in a single season, 21 in 1966.  Second only to Jerry Hairston in career pinch hits.  Played for Sox less than four seasons.
  • Twice led the American League in pinch hits, 1965 and 1966.
  • Set major league record for career pinch hits in 1965.  Still second all-time with 145.
  • 507 pinch hit at-bats is the second-most in the major leagues.
  • Batted .318 pinch hitting in 1966.
  • Acquired off waivers by Sox from Pittsburgh in 1964.  Led the majors in pinch hit at-bats all three of his subsequent years with the Sox.
  • Appeared in 243 games for the Sox but only caught seven games.
  • Joined the Sox in the midst of a pennant race on September 15, 1964.  Hit a home run in his first at-bat.  Extended his career by three seasons as the Pale Hose's pinch hitting specialist, forever endearing himself to Sox fans.

Chosen by Sox fans' as the greatest hall of fame pinch hitter.
