Catcher.  Chicago White Sox, 1981-93.
Batted:  right.  Threw:  right.
Born:  12/26/47, Bellows Falls, Vermont.


  • American League Rookie of the Year and Gold Glove winner, 1972.
  • Holds major league record for most games caught, 2,226.
  • Holds major league record for most home runs by a catcher, 351.
  • Finished third in M.V.P. voting in 1983.
  • Equaled Sox home run record with 37 in 1987 (Dick Allen).
  • Oldest catcher to ever hit 20 home runs, 1987 at age 40.
  • Four all-star appearances with White Sox, starting catcher on three occasions.
  • Ranks among all-time Sox leaders for home runs (third, 214), rbi's (sixth, 762), games (eighth, 1,421), and runs (tenth, 649).
  • Achieved all his Sox records in spite of playing his first eleven seasons in Boston.
  • Like a fine wine, seemingly improved with age and undisputed leader of the team through most of his twelve seasons on the south side.  The perennial favorite of Sox fans, known and loved as both "The Commander" and simply "Pudge".
  • White Sox retired Carlton's' #72 in 1997.
  • Inducted into Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame in 2000, his second year of eligibility.  Congratulations, Carlton!

    Chosen by Sox fans as the greatest hall of fame catcher.
