Ozzie Guillen

WSI's Sox Fans' Hall of Fame

Ozzie Guillen
Shortstop.  Chicago White Sox, 1985-97.
Bats:  left.  Throws:  right.
Born:  1/20/64, Oculare del Tuy, Venezuela.

  • 1985 American League Rookie of the Year.  Also named to the 1985 All Rookie team.
  • Three-time American League all-star, 1988, 1990, and 1991.
  • 1990 Gold Glove winner, the first for the Sox in nine seasons.
  • Posted four of the Sox's top ten fielding percentages for shortstops.
  • Amongst Sox career leaders for games (third, 1,743), at-bats (third, 6,067), hits (fifth, 1,608),  runs (eighth, 693), and total bases (eighth, 2,056).
  • Named co-captain with Carlton Fisk for the 1990 White Sox team that won 94 games.
  • Led Sox in hitting for first-half of the 1990 season with .319 average, including .383 in May with just one fielding error.
  • Appeared in his one and only World Series with the 1999 Atlanta Braves.
  • After Chico Carrasquel and Luis Aparicio, the third in a succession of talented Venezuelan shortstops to play for the Chicago White Sox, known to Sox fans as The Venezuelan Connection.
  • Acquired by Sox GM Roland Hemond as a minor league prospect for former Cy Young Award winner Lamarr Hoyt, quickly proved his worth by grabbing Rookie of the Year honors for the Sox.  Chose his uniform number to honor his childhood idol and Venezuelan national hero, shortstop Dave Concepcion.  For all thirteen years he wore the Sox uniform, a strong clubhouse presence and active leader in the Chicago's Latin American  community, donating his time and money to many charities including  purchasing tickets for unprivileged children in his "Ozzie's Amigos" program, #13, "The Ozzeroo", Ozzie Guillen.

Chosen by Sox fans for induction from the 1980's era.
