Joe Horlen

WSI's Sox Fans' Hall of Fame

Joe Horlen
Pitcher.  Chicago White Sox, 1961-71.
Batted:  right.  Threw:  right.
Born:  8/14/37, San Antonio, Texas.

  • Posted ERA beneath 2.50 in four separate seasons for the Sox including a microscopic 1.88 in 1964.
  • Pitched no-hitter versus the Detroit Tigers on September 10, 1967, setting the stage for a doubleheader sweep of the pennant contenders, and placing the Sox squarely back in the hunt for the A.L. championship.
  • Finished behind Boston's Jim Lonborg for the 1967 A.L. Cy Young Award in spite of leading the league in ERA (2.06, over one run better than Lonborg's), winning percentage (.731), and shutouts (6), while also serving as the Sox's pitching ace, by far the best staff in the league that season (2.45 staff ERA), nearly a run better than Boston's.
  • Chosen to the American League's 1967 all-star team.
  • In 1964, held opposition to .190 batting average and 6.07 hits per 9 innings, both second-best in franchise history.
  • Amongst club's leaders in games started (sixth, 284), innings pitched (seventh, 1,918.0), strike outs (eighth, 1,007), and wins (113, eighth).
  • In spite of career 3.11 ERA, only managed three winning seasons in eleven lifetime with the Sox, thus earning his nickname "Hard Luck."
  • The right-handed ace of the Sox pitching staff, teamed with lefties Gary Peters and Tommy John to build the club's most effective rotation since the dead ball era, the ever-present wad of Kleenex stuffed inside his cheek because tobacco made him sick, Sox pitching great Joe Horlen.

First choice of Sox fans for hall of fame induction from the 1960's era.
