Bo Jackson

WSI's Sox Fans' Hall of Fame

Bo Jackson
Designated Hitter, Outfield.  Chicago White Sox, 1991-93.
Batted:  right.  Threw:  right.
Born:  11/30/62, Bessemer, Alabama.

  • A star athlete in two sports, a former Heisman Trophy winner and star running back of the Los Angeles Raiders football club.  Also an all-star outfielder for the Kansas City Royals.
  • Injured playing for the Raiders in January, 1991.  Released from his baseball contract by the Royals in March that same year.  Signed by the Chicago White Sox two weeks later.
  • Returned from six months of rehabilitation, and on September 2, 1991 collected an rbi (against the Royals!) in his very first at-bat for the Sox.
  • In spite of additional rehabiliation, forced to undergo hip reconstruction surgery and spend the entire 1992 season on the Sox disabled list.
  • Defying all odds, returned to the Sox for Opening Day, 1993 at Comiskey Park.
  • In his first major league at-bat after hip reconstruction surgery, clubbed a home run deep into Comiskey's right field stands, then dedicated the feat to the memory of his late mother.
  • In yet another bigger than life moment, clubbed a moonshot home run into Comiskey's left field seats to clinch the American League Western Division title, September 27, 1993.
  • Signed with the Sox in a move skeptics dismissed as a cheap publicity stunt, through dedication and hard work, got a measure of satisfaction in returning to the game -- only to suffer a setback no other athlete had ever attempted to overcome -- return from hip reconstruction surgery.  Became a celebrity beyond baseball and the world of athletics by achieving that exact goal, a legend too great for just baseball, football, or even medical history, the great Bo Jackson.

Sox Fans' Hall of Fame inductee from the 1990's era.
