Pete Ward

WSI's Sox Fans' Hall of Fame

Pete Ward
Third Base, First Base, Outfield.  Chicago White Sox, 1963-69.
Batted:  left.  Threw:  right.
Born:  7/26/39, Montreal, Quebec.

  • As a 24 year old rookie, led the 1963 White Sox in batting average (.295), home runs (22, tied with Dave Nicholson), and runs batted in (84).
  • Led the 1964 Chicago White Sox in home runs (23) and rbi's (94) en route to a 98 win season, the third-greatest total achieved in franchise history.
  • Also led the pennant-contending 1967 White Sox in home runs (18) and runs batted in (62).  Pete Ward was the closet thing to an offensive threat the Sox possessed through most of the 1960's.
  • Lost the 1963 A.L. Rookie of the Year award to teammate Gary Peters.  Won The Sporting News' 1963 ROY award.
  • Set club record with three grand slams in 1964, since broken by Albert Belle with four in 1997.
  • Injured in an automobile accident in 1965 and spent remainder of career trying to recapture his earlier form.
  • Achieved limited success as pinch hitter later in career.
  • His 1963 rookie production still amongst club's finest for hits (third, 177),  home runs (third, 22), runs scored (seventh, 80), and rbi's (eighth, 84).
  • The Canadian who loved hockey, son of NHL star Jimmy Ward, the key youngster acquired by the Sox from Baltimore for Luis Aparicio, didn't disappoint Sox fans by immediately leading the club's offense to 94, 98, and 95 victories, and three consecutive second-place finishes to the hated Yankees, a promising career shortened by a freak accident -- on his way to see a Blackhawks hockey game, "Pistol" Pete Ward.

Chosen by Sox fans for induction from the 1960's era.
