Pitcher.  Chicago White Sox, 1967-78.
Batted:  right.  Threw:  left.
Born:  10/22/41, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

 

  • 4-time 20-game winner for the Chicago White Sox (1971-74).
  • 1971 American League Cy Young Award runner up (Vida Blue), posting 1.91 ERA.
  • Led the American League in wins two consecutive years (24, both 1972 and 1973).  Also led the league in games started four consecutive seasons (1972-75).
  • A relief specialist earlier in his career, led the American League in games three consecutive years (1968-70)!
  • The Sporting News' 1972 Pitcher of the Year.  Also named their 1968 Relief Pitcher of the Year.
  • Holds club record with 49 games started in 1972.  Also holds club record with 88 appearances in 1968.
  • 1972 and 1974 American League all-star.
  • Amongst club's single-season leaders for shutouts (third, 8 in 1972), relief wins (fourth, 12 in 1968), innings pitched (fourth, 376.2 in 1972), and wins (tenth, 24 in 1972 and 1973).
  • Amongst club's career leaders for relief wins (second, 32), games (third, 578), strike outs (fourth, 1,332), wins (fifth, 163), innings pitched (fifth, 2,524.1) and saves (fifth, 57).
  • Pitched 300+ innings for the White Sox four consecutive seasons (1971-74).
  • Pitched both halves of a doubleheader on July 20, 1973.
  • A former "bonus baby" of the Boston Red Sox, learned the knuckleball inside the Sox bullpen from future hall of famer Hoyt Wilhelm, became the league's preeminent relief specialist in the late 60's, then became the workhorse of the club's starting rotation through the mid 70's, shouldering pitch totals unmatched since the days of Big Ed Walsh, a great starting pitcher, relief pitcher, and artist with the knuckleball, without question one of the all-time greats to wear the White Sox uniform, #28, Wilbur Wood.
