Early Wynn

WSI's Sox Fans' Hall of Fame

Early Wynn
Pitcher.  Chicago White Sox, 1958-62.
Batted:  switch.  Threw:  right.
Born:  6/2/20, Hartford, Alabama.  Died 1999.


  • 1959 Cy Young Award winner.  Also named Pitcher of the Year and Comeback Player of the Year that same season.
  • Tops in the American League with 22 wins in 1959, leading the Sox to the franchise's first A.L. championship in 40 years.
  • Led the league in wins four times (once for the Sox), games started four times (once with the Sox) and innings pitched three times (once with the Sox).
  • Twice led the American League in strike outs for the Sox (184 in 1958, and 179 in 1959).
  • One of only ten Sox pitchers to ever lead the American League in wins.  One of only five Sox pitchers to ever lead the American League in strike outs.
  • Selected to the American League's 1959 all-star team.
  • Winning Sox pitcher in Game One of the 1959 World Series, an 11-0 thrashing of the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Early would also start the Game Four and the ill-fated Game Six, lost to L.A.
  • In spite of a push to get him his 300th career victory, fell two wins short and was cut by the Sox at the end of spring training in 1963.  Picked up by Cleveland where he collected his final two victories and achieved the milestone.
  • Reintroduced to younger fans as part of the Sox's radio broadcast team in 1982 and 1983.
  • An easygoing and humorous personality, but deadly serious when taking the mound, joked once that he would knock his own mother down if she dug into the batters box, a popular player with the Sox fans inspite of being acquired in trade for fan favorite Minnie Minoso, the hulking aging veteran who took the Sox team and its fans to a place unknown to them for forty seasons, the World Series, forever to be remembered and respected, Early "Gus" Wynn.
  • Elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1972.
