Four Errors, No Problem!
(July 16)
Short Take: .500 again, baby!
Four errors. Four! Once upon a time, even one error was enough
to deflate our White Sox leading inevitably to another pathetic Sox
loss. Tonight Jerry Manuel (Jose Canseco in right
field?)used some crazy line up choices, watched the club take the lead, lose
it, get it back, and hold on for victory. An ugly but oh so sweet
victory in Milwaukee, 6-5 over the Brewers! Back to .500!
Ah, the errors. Isn't that what everyone wants to know about.
Yes, Jose Valentin led the way with two. Ray Durham has
one, too. Paul Konerko had one bounce off his glove at first
base. Perfectly ugly baseball. Make that, perfectly ugly WINNING
baseball! That's the only kind Sox Fans care about!
In the #2 hole, Valentin's got on base three times, all of them
walks. Durham pitched in a hit, one of only seven the Sox got en route
to scoring six runs. Konerko was hitless but walked and scored.
The four errors ultimately led to nothing more than a bit of indigestion for
Sox Fans. Winning cures that ill!
James Baldwin had a showcase start, several contenders interested in
seeing him pitch before making offers to Sox GM Kenny Williams.
He had a nice strike zone to work with collecting eight K's in five innings
work The five hits and two errors led to four Brewer runs, two
earned.
Baldwin left the game with his sixth win of the season after a big four-run
sixth inning put the Sox back on top. Magglio Ordonez batted one
in with a sacrifice, Royce Clayton tripled (!) to bat in two more, and
pinch hitter Herbert Perry brought Clayton home with an rbi
single. Four hits, four runs. Sweet!
The bullpen was awesome. Jon Garland had a bit of trouble with
two walks, but Gary Glover picked him up, himself pitching 2.1 innings
relief with only a dinger to blemish the effort. Keith Foulke
shut the door in the ninth for his 21st save of the season.
Errors be damned, make that 45-45, and color the Sox a .500 team
again!
