Broom Time!
(June 14)
Short Take: Sweep the Reds!
Just two games under. Just two games under .500! The Sox
continue their improbable march back from the dead with a sweep of the
Cincinnati Reds, 7-5 at Comiskey Park. Lots of work still to be done,
but Sox Fans, you got to feel good about the direction the team is taking.
Frank Thomas, Jose Valentin, and Herbert Perry are all
missing from the line up. Meanwhile Jim Parque, Cal Eldred,
Bill Simas, and Lorenzo Barcelo are missing from the pitching
staff. And the team keeps winning! Sox Fans, you have to love
that!
The brooms were out early when a first inning rally was capped by a
glorious grand slam by Paul Konerko. Chicks dig the long ball,
Walnuts! They don't mind a single ballplayer's salary either.
It was a lovely game for most of the remainder of the evening. James
Baldwin wasn't dominant but he had a fat lead and Sox Fans were hardly
concerned when the Reds managed to touch him for a run in the third. Magglio
Ordonez hit his second homerun in as many nights to get that run back in
the fifth.
Our collars got a bit tighter when Baldwin gave up three more runs in the
sixth making it a one-run game, and some Sox Fans were outright nervous when
the tying run scored in the seventh. A wild-pitch that Josh Paul couldn't
handle and a lousy peg to third base helped both Reds rallies on their push
back into the game.
So it was with relief that the Sox came right back with two runs of their
own off the bats of Carlos Lee (an rbi double) and Paul Konerko
(an rbi sacrifice).
Bob Howry sent them down in order in the eighth and Keith Foulke
repeated the feat in the ninth.
Flag Day fireworks, high winds and thunderstorms, and a trip to Saint Louis
to meet Tony LaRussa's gang. 16 wins in 19 games.
Take it all in stride Sox Fans and keep winning!
