Sox, Yanks to meet for AL Pennant

Chicago Sun-Times
October 5, 1964

Chicago (AP) The White Sox 10 game season-ending winning streak has carried them to a season-ending tie with the New York Yankees, both teams ending their 1964 campaign deadlocked at 99-63. A coin toss has determined Comiskey Park to be the site of the playoff. The odds favor the Yanks, as manager Yogi Berra's boys have gone 12-6 this season vs. Al Lopez's crew. The game will take place at 1:30 today.

This will be the first AL tiebreaker since 1948, when the Red Sox and Indians met at Fenway Park to decide that year's pennant. The Indians dispatched the Red Sox 8-3 on their way to the World Series, where they defeated the Boston Braves 4 games to 2.

The National League will also have a playoff, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia Phillies having also ended their seasons tied with records of 93-69. The two will meet in a best two-of-three playoff series, per NL rules. St. Louis will host the first game in Busch Stadium, with Connie Mack Stadium hosting the second and possibly third games.

This is the first time in baseball history that both leagues have had teams tied at the end of the season.
