more old headlines

By the way, I need to mention that Hitmen77 was my personal favorite "Cubune Headline" poster. Some of his headlines were not only laugh-out-loud funny, but very prescient. He wrote a few headlines that were eeriely close to headlines that appeared in the real Tribune a couple of days later. When I complimented him on it, he modestly deflected the praise by saying it was like "shooting fish in a barrel." I always liked to see a new post by him in that thread.

Memories of the "Tribune Headline" thread

This may seem unusual or seem like I am patting myself on the back, but believe me, I am not.

I fondly remember back in July 2005 when Dr. Crawdad started a thread called "You write tomorrow's Cubune headline." It was a response to Scott Podsednik defeating Derek Jeter in the fan's vote for the final All-Star representative. Craw asked WSIers how the Tribune would spin it. (Note: I HATE the word "Cubune" but I would be dishonest if I didn't use it, because that...

Kirk offers his thoughts.....

Posted 11-05-2010 at 10:18 PM by TommyJohn (No!!Mary!!!)
Updated 11-20-2010 at 10:46 AM by TommyJohn

Today Kirk Gibson-former outfielder/manager/psycho/whacko/nutjob-offered his thoughts on the death of Sparky Anderson, the manager for whom he played in Detroit. They were both a part of the 1984 Tigers team that went wire-to-wire in winning the World Series that year. He....

Ricky the whiny sportswriter here. I interrupt this obit to whine once again. You mentioned 1984. That was the year my Cubbies lost 3 games to 2 to the Padres. If they had won Game 5, there never would...

Alternate World Series

Posted 11-02-2010 at 07:19 PM by TommyJohn (No!!Mary!!!)

Headline from a 1946 edition of the "Onion" in the book "Our Dumb Century:"

Nazis, Japs victorious in alternate Phillip Dick Universe

Pretty funny stuff, and now that baseball is over, I will be pretty bored and looking for things to do. One thing I got around to thinking about was MLB's League Championship Series. Some of those series have sometimes been far more compelling and memorable than the World Series itself. I...
