vs. New York Yankees
at Comiskey Park

If any two teams symbolized the widening chasm of baseball's haves and have-nots in this new era of free agency, it was the Yankees and the White Sox.

The Yankees were the team in the penthouse-the elites who were the absolute best at what they did, and thus the richest; looked up at with a mixture of hatred and envy by others who resented their success while wanting it for themselves.

The White...

vs. Detroit Tigers
at Comiskey Park

Wilbur Wood took the mound this Sunday afternoon for his first start since May 9 of the previous year, when he had his knee shattered by a line drive. The competition would be the very same Tigers club against whom that had happened. The results were just as pretty.

It was Bat Day at Comiskey Park, and a crowd of 31,030 came out for it. Not as much as recent years, like the 51,094 who turned out in...

vs. Cleveland Indians
at Comiskey Park

The Sox get hot in May, going 8-3 over their first 11 games. They came home from a two week road trip to meet the Indians on Friday the 13th, which the ever-creative Veeck promoted as "anti-Superstition Night." Mirrors were brought out to the field and smashed in defiance of old wives' tales. The Sox then slapped the Indians 5-3.

The next day was a bright and early game. The Sox were holding...

vs. Texas Rangers
at Comiskey Park

The Sox end April on a losing note, a 14-4 crushing at the hands of the Rangers in the second of a three game set at Comiskey. It is the team's third loss in a row and puts them at 10-8, in 4th place but only one game out of 1st.

One highlight of the game came in the 8th inning, when Wilbur Wood entered the game in relief. Wilbur, who hadn't played since getting his kneecap shattered on the previous May...

April 26,1977
vs. Detroit Tigers
at Tiger Stadium

The home opener win against Boston is the first of five straight for the White Sox, including three straight from the Blue Jays at Comiskey. Richie Zisk swings a hot bat, clubbing five home runs in the early going as the surprising Sox run their record to 9-5.

The two game miniseries against the Tigers in Detroit offered fans a preview of what was to come in the season of '77.

The first...
