June 1,1973
vs. Milwaukee Brewers
at Milwaukee County Stadium

"Here is wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the Beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is 666." -Revelation 13:18 (New International Version)

Pretty frightening, eh? One of the scariest verses in one of the scariest chapters of the Bible. It describes a time in which a huge beast will emerge from the sea to wreak terror, horror, and misery...

May 31,1973
vs. Detroit Tigers
at White Sox Park

Jorge Orta was added to the list of Sox players with aches and pains as he nursed a sore leg. Carlos May still had his achy thigh and Henderson was on the shelf. An event that happened this night typified the luck that was starting to bedevil the team.

It started out innocently enough. The Sox teed off on Tiger starter Jim Perry, whacking him for seven runs in the first three innings of the contest. Rookie outfielder...

May 28, 1973
vs. Cleveland Indians
at White Sox Park

It was late May, the Sox were in 1st place, winning and showing no signs of letting up. Sure, there were still salary dramas going on behind the scenes. You wouldn't know it by the way they were playing. They appeared to be one, big happy family. All was right with the world.

But small cracks began to develop. Carlos May strained his thigh and was assigned the DH position for a few days. A worse injury occurred...

May 20, 1973
vs. Minnesota Twins
at White Sox Park

This day went down in team history as the day that the White Sox rolled straight 5's-as in 55,555.

That was the record number of fans that jammed their way into the ballpark for the Sunday Bat Day doubleheader with the Twins. No one has any explanation for the crowd. It was a popular promotion, sure. And it was the second year in a row that it had drawn a crowd of more than 50,000. But there were years that...

May 15,1973
vs. Oakland A's
at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

The Sox' 9 game streak is snapped by Boston on Monday the 7th. They play the next few games at a .500 clip before heading out to Oakland for a two game hookup with the defending World Series Champions.

The first game sees Ken Holtzman outduel Wilbur Wood 5-1 in a game that lasted a nifty 1 hour, 50 minutes. The second game of the series would go a bit longer than that.

The Sox got down...
