In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

Games and Moments

vs. Baltimore Orioles
at Memorial Stadium
Just when you thought it was safe to believe in the White Sox again...
The 11-13 Pale Hose go to Baltimore trying to claw their way back to .500 respectability. It doesn't go well for them, and for one player in particular.
Bill Melton was struggling at this point in the season. Not with the bat, mind you. He had 3 HRs and a .326 average.
His defense was another matter. Melton seemed to have limited range at 3rd base, and he'd made 10 errors in the young season, including four in the past three games, after making 22 in 1969.
This night's fun started with Boog Powell touching Gerry Janeski for a three run bomb in bottom of the 1st.
The bottom of the 3rd kicked off some Sox Follies. Melton booted a grounder to get things started, then Janeski dropped a Gail Hopkins toss. A walk and a base hit scored one run, and another came in when Ed Herrmann dropped a throw from Carlos May.
Melton barely had time to recover from his miscue kicking off that big inning when, in the 6th, Davey Johnson lofted a pop foul on the 3rd base side. Melton got under it but lost track of it in the bright stadium lights. The ball zipped down, nicked off the heel of his glove and smashed into the bridge of his nose. Melton crumbled to the ground, unconscious. He was carted off the field on a stretcher. The final indignity? He was charged with an error on the play, his 6th in the past four games and 12th of the season.
His roommate Syd O'Brien, who would replace him at 3rd base, said "He felt the press was down on him and he was hearing what other players were saying about him and he was trying to fight it all. He was all wound up inside, he was trying so hard to do well,"
The Sox would lose the game 6-1 and Melton for at least a week.
NOTE: This game was played in a snappy 2:05.
Also of note-the Orioles were in 1st place with best record in the American League, but to look at the attendance for this Friday night match, you would swear it had been played in Chicago, not in the home of the defending league champions. Total: 6,913.
