In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

vs. Kansas City Royals
at Municipal Stadium, Kansas City

Any illusions fans had of the 1969 team being a contender after the thrilling comeback win vs. the Twins had vaulted them into 1st place were quickly shattered over the next four games.

Minnesota slapped them 12-1 on the 26th to kick off the losing streak. Two more losses followed, including their first game against the Royals in Kansas City in the same stadium where another Kansas City team had crushed their pennant hopes less than two years earlier.

This game started with Carlos May continuing to look like the next big baseball star-he led off the game with his 5th home run of the season.

The Sox staked starter Joel Horlen to a 4-1 lead. He wavered in the 7th, giving up two and was replaced by Bob Locker, who held the lead until the 9th. Then, with a man on 2nd (due to a single and error) Hawk Taylor singled off Wilbur Wood to tie the score.

The game dragged on until the 12th, when the Royals had two on due to a single, stolen base and intentional walk. With one out, Sox pitcher Sammy Ellis uncorked a pitch that Joe Foy smacked for a base hit. The runner on second scored and the game was over.
