August 11, 1969
vs. Mortar Barrel
at Camp Pendleton, Ca.

Carlos May was, no doubt about it, the find of the year, nay, the decade for the White Sox. The outfielder from Alabama took the South Side by storm in 1969, homering twice on Opening Day, then proceeding to blast AL pitching to pieces. By May 16th, he had 10 home runs. On June 24th, he hit his 15th of the season.

He cooled off a bit, home run-wise, but was, along with Bill Melton, part of...

July 20, 1969
vs. Kansas City Royals
at White Sox Park

Walt Williams strode to the plate to lead off the bottom of the 7th inning of Game 1 of a Sunday doubleheader. The Sox were trailing 5-4 and hoping to get a rally going. On the mound stood well-traveled Moe Drabowsky of the Royals. Moe wound up and fired one plateward. At 3:17PM Walt slapped the pitch into right field for a single.

At that, the centerfield "Monster" scoreboard erupted into fireworks....

June 24, 1969
vs. Seattle Pilots
at Sick's Stadium

The Sox continue their west coast swing with a stop in Seattle for a four spot, starting with a twi-night doubleheader this night.

The Sox take the first one 6-4, with Wilbur Wood getting the win in relief. It was in the second game, though, that the fireworks flew.

In this game, the M&M Boys (May and Melton) continued to lay waste to AL pitching.

Carlos kicked off the festivities...

June 20, 1969
vs. California Angels
at Anaheim Stadium

It figures that once the White Sox got the hitting they so sorely lacked in previous seasons, the once-star pitching staff would give out.

Joel Horlen and Tommy John were actually reliable at this point. The lowered mound, astroturf infield and not-so-great defense caused their ERAs to take a bit of a hit, but they still had their good games. Gary Peters, however, was in his second year of struggling. He...

June 2, 1969
vs. Boston Red Sox
at Fenway Park

King Carlos does it again!

The Sox are treading within a few games of .500 (19-22) going into this Monday night contest in Beantown.

Boston takes a 4-0 lead off starter Joel Horlen; three of those runs are driven in on home runs by Carl Yastrzemski and Rico Petrocelli.

The Sox wait until the top of the 8th to do something about it. Tommy McCraw singles with two out and two on to make it...
