In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

vs. Oakland A's
at White Sox Park

Al Lopez quickly became the calm aftermath of the storm that was Eddie Stanky. Coaches were moved back to their own dressing room, the petty fines stopped and the clubhouse media ban was lifted with the words "you boys are always welcome."

Then, more luck took over. Just 11 days into his second tenure as Sox pilot, Lopez was felled with an attack of appendicitis. Off to the hospital he went and was laid up for several weeks while coach Les Moss took over.

Moss was skipper this night, which found the Sox in a twi-night doubleheader with the A's.

There really was no action in the first game, which the A's won 1-0. The one bright spot occurred in the 9th inning, when history was made.

Hoyt Wilhelm trotted out of the bullpen to relieve starter Tommy John, who had been lifted for a pinch hitter in the 8th. This marked Wilhelm's 907th appearance in a major league game, breaking the pitchers' record held at the time by Cy Young. Wilhelm retired Dave Duncan, John Donaldson and Jim Nash in order.

Wilhelm would last until 1972 and appear in a total of 1,070 games. Not bad for a guy who played his first MLB game at age 29.

Meanwhile, Tommy John was tagged with the loss. John, who had started the season 7-0, dropped to 7-3, but with an ERA of 1.98.
