In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

June 12, 1970
vs. Washington Senators
at White Sox Park

The 1970 White Sox had some good players and moments in the midst of all their badness.

Tommy John was one of those bright spots during this dark period. His ERA jumped due to the lowering of the mound, but he remained one of the rocks of a pitching staff that ranked at the bottom of the league in most catergories, including ERA.

John took the mound this night and threw a gem-a two-hit shutout against the Senators. Wayne Comer's single in the 5th was the only hit through 8; light-hitting shortstop Eddie Brinkman dinked a single in the 9th to end John's bid for at least a 1-hitter.

Syd O'Brien helped out John with his first home run of the season in the 3rd. The Sox gave John a more comfortable cushion in the 7th by pouring on 5 more, 3 coming in on a home run by Ken Berry.

The win upped John's record to 5-8. His ERA was a respectable 3.38. This game was one of three shutouts John managed to toss this season, despite the handicap of having the league's second-worst defense playing behind him.
