vs. Minnesota Twins
at Metropolitan Stadium

The Sox beat Oakland 3 of 4 and take 2 of 3 from the Angels, to whom the Sox had traded the unsigned Ken Brett on June 15, in exchange for three pitchers and a substantial sum said to be in the six figures.

The move angered Sox players who were fond of Brett, one of the most outgoing, swinging guys in the clubhouse. Bart Johnson said that it could only mean the Sox were playing for 1978, while Richie...

vs. Oakland A's
at Comiskey Park

Say! Remember the Oakland A's? You know, the team Dave Condon campaigned to have moved to Chicago for 1976? The "champions with mustaches" that Rick Talley sneered at Sox fans for not wanting to move to the south side to replace the Seattle-bound White Sox, who had been there for 75 years? They came to town Father's Day weekend with a record of 28-31, down in 6th place, ahead of only the expansion Seattle Mariners....

vs. Minnesota Twins
at Metropolitan Stadium

The Yankees took the rubber match of the three game set with the Sox by clubbing six home runs, two of which jumped off the bats of ex-Sox Carlos May and Bucky Dent. The Sox then headed out to Minnesota for a two game set with the first place Twins. The Sox were two games behind at the start of the series, a sweep would put them in 1st by percentage points.

Ken Brett took the mound and did a fine...

vs. New York Yankees
at Comiskey Park

One night after being bruised for seven runs in one inning by the White Sox, the Penthouse Boys repaid the Poorhouse Dwellers in kind.

35,789 fans had barely settled into their seats when the Yankees blew the game open with 7 runs in the top of the 2nd. The big blow came when Thurman Munson singled with the bases loaded. Two runs came in on the hit and one more scored on an error by Chet Lemon. That...

June 3, 1977
vs. New York Yankees
at Comiskey Park

If any two teams symbolized the widening chasm of baseball's haves and have-nots in this new era of free agency, it was the Yankees and the White Sox.

The Yankees were the team in the penthouse-the elites who were the absolute best at what they did, and thus the richest; looked up at with a mixture of hatred and envy by others who resented their success while wanting it for themselves.

The White...
