In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

vs. Cleveland Indians
at Cleveland Municipal Stadium

"All year long, the critics have discounted the guts of this team" manager Eddie Stanky said at one point during the great 1967 pennant chase. He was right. The team had bounced back from two seeming knockout punches-the stunning 7-3 loss to Detroit, then a three game losing streak that knocked them 3 games back with 16 left to play.

Next came a three game set with the loaded Twins at home that started with the Sox 2.5 games back with 14 left. They absolutely needed to win all three games to retain any hope of staying alive. They went out and did just that, the pitching muffling Killebrew, Carew and Co. In the 2nd game they even came back from a 4-1, 9th inning deficit to win 5-4.

They went 4-2 in the week following the sweep. The last win was this Sunday contest in Cleveland vs. an Indians team long out of it. The Sox scored 3 in the first three innings, including a home run by Ken Boyer off Sudden Sam McDowell. Starter Cisco Carlos faltered in the 3rd but was bolstered by handy relief help from Don McMahon and Bob Locker.

The day ends with the Sox 89-68, 1 game back with 5 to go and very much alive in this tense race.
