I have had an idea for a while-a book entitled "The 50 Greatest Games that Did Not Involve the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox." This book would take a look at games that are, for the most part, overlooked by the ESPN-driven hype fest for the Yankees and Red Sox. The purpose would be to say enough!-to all the damn hype and the books about baseball's great moments being monopolized by those two teams. I mean, come on. ESPN.com last year had a list of great LCS moments, I think it...

"Greatest White Sox Team of All Time" simulation tournament

Posted 05-15-2009 at 04:50 PM by TommyJohn (No!!Mary!!!)

So I decided to have a little fun with my "Greatest White Sox Team of All-Time" rankings and submit them to a tournament to see who would beat who over a seven-game series. Now I have no delusions about how such scenarios would actually play out. It would be enormous fun if we could somehow get all these teams together and see them play-and how it would turn out. For now, though, I turn to whatifsports.com computer simulations. Kind of stinks in that I would much rather do it the old-fashioned...

Shutouts Maybe, But No Shutdowns

Posted 05-14-2009 at 03:30 PM by tebman (Try To Hit 'Em Where They Ain't)

Six shutouts in 33 games. I put those words right out front to remind me why, in answer to a question last night, I told a friend that I didn't know when the next Sox game was scheduled.

But that was the malaise talking. Of course I knew when the next game was and who the Sox were playing. It's just that I find myself drifting in an arid stupor somewhere between anger and resignation after watching my team look like pigeons out there. And all I can do is feed the birds and hope they...

To be or not to be...Cubsessed

"Cubsession" n.-An obsession with the Chicago National League Ballclub, Inc. Said to afflict several rooters of the *sneer* other team in town, if one does truly exist. *sneer*

I have been thinking about "Cubsession," that fine, badly overused word coined here on WSI, lately. I have several rambling, disjointed thoughts about it. I just thought I would share a few in the privacy of my own blog, where you are free to come and read it if you like. It isn't on the...

Thanks, Mark

Posted 05-08-2009 at 03:11 PM by tebman (Try To Hit 'Em Where They Ain't)

Playing with the pencil in my hand Thursday night, my mind wandered. I was sitting in the midst of a meeting where the discussion floated between topics like clouds on a breezy day, and I realized I had no idea what was being discussed.

The cellphone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text message from my son asking me if I was watching the White Sox game. "No," I wrote back, "I'm at a meeting. What's going on?"

He wrote back to tell me that Mark Buehrle...
