In honor of actor Andy Garcia and his (unintentionally) hilarious reaction to Sofia (Mary Corleone) Coppola's death scene in "The Godfather, Part III."

August 29,1975
vs. Baltimore Orioles
at Memorial Stadium

The White Sox continue to slog through August at a sluggish, slightly below .500 pace. The hot streak of July that pushed them to .500 respectability is long past and forgotten and the team is sitting at 64-68 going into this game.

The Sox wasted no time getting things going against Oriole starter Ross Grimsley. Ken Henderson, whose batting average was in the .250 range, started things off by teeing...

vs. Baltimore Orioles
at White Sox Park

Five days after announcing the fan vote on whether they wanted to keep the Sox or see the A's move to town, Rick Talley announced the preliminary totals, and it wasn't even close.

"White Sox fans would prefer to see the current team remain, rather than see the world champion Oakland A's come to town." Talley wrote. The "Keep the White Sox" choice led the "Bring the A's to...

July 24,1975
vs. New York Yankees
at White Sox Park

Lost in all the off-the-field turmoil involving Harry Caray's criticisms and John Allyn's financial ledger was the fact that there was still a schedule of games to be played.

The steadily improving White Sox took the field this Thursday to match up against the Yankees in a Thursday afternoon doubleheader in front of a modest crowd of 13,910.

Wilbur Wood took the mound for game one and once again...

The Chicago A's?

A July 30,1975 Tribune article authored by Dave Condon started with an ominous headline: "Will A's Become the White Sox of '76?"

Condon's story went on to say that MLB had a solution for the Sox' financial situation in mind: move the team to Seattle, where a brand-new, domed stadium awaited, and shift another team to 35th and Shields to take its place. The team would be renamed the White Sox in order to ensure franchise continuity. The team Condon named as the one that MLB...

He's Not Wild About Harry

Bill Melton had had a bad year in 1974. He started the season in a slump and at one point in June his average had dropped to .199. He was among the favorite targets of broadcaster Harry Caray. At the end of the season he admitted that he was upset that the Sox had traded for Ron Santo and wanted out. He then revealed that he had played "horsefeathers" until June hoping to force a trade. The admission did not endear him to Sox fans.
