April 7,1973
vs. Texas Rangers
at Arlington Stadium

For the second year in a row, a White Sox opener is delayed, this time by the elements. Rain dumps down on half the state of Texas, forcing a 24 hour postponement.

The teams take the field the next evening, making this the second straight night opener for both teams. Wilbur Wood takes to the mound to square off against Dick Bosman of the Rangers.

The Sox make it exciting in the 1st, when...

Awards galore poured in for the 1972 White Sox, to no one's surprise. After all, to go from the worst team in baseball to the second-best team in the American League in two short years seemed to be nothing short of a miracle.

The Sporting News named Roland Hemond and Chuck Tanner their Executive of the Year and Manager of the Year, respectively.

The "Bible of Baseball" also named Wilbur Wood its AL Pitcher of the Year. Workhorse Wilbur had started 49...

October 4,1972
vs. Minnesota Twins
at Metropolitan Stadium

On September 28, Sox fans' dream of seeing their team pull off a miracle division title officially died when the A's defeated the Twins 8-7 to clinch their second straight AL West title. If any Sox fans felt an urge to draw cartoons of sad faced, crying clowns as a way of letting the world know about the Very Special Pain they were going through, they apparently kept such urges to themselves, as no such cartoons...

September 27,1972
vs. Kansas City Royals
at White Sox Park

The 1952 novel "The Natural" by Bernard Malamud featured Roy Hobbs, a baseball player with ungodly ability who, with his mystical bat Wonderboy smashes unbelievable, breathtaking home runs and almost single-handedly lifts the formerly decrepit New York Knights into pennant contention.

The 1972 season featured Dick Allen, a baseball player with ungodly ability who, with his mystical 42 ounce...

September 19,1972
vs. Oakland A's
at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

In the week ensuing the 9/11 win over the Royals, the Sox go 2-3 over the next 5, while Oakland catches fire and goes 5-0. Their lead widens to 5 games with 13 left to play for the Sox and 14 for the A's. Hopes for a Miracle on 35th St. were dimming as the White Sox journeyed out to Oakland to take on the A's in a two game set.

The A's may have been on the verge of a second division title,...
