There is little you can do, I imagine, to prevent something like this, short of putting a BP-style cage in front of the pitcher. It's part of the risk of baseball.
If you want to keep a guy from dying on the field, you have to have pitchers wear a helmet that covers the temples. The first guy to get a comebacker in the temple is the first guy to die. Nobody's going to walk away from one of those.
