If we are going objectively by career WAR, then these are the 5 best pitchers I ever saw pitch in person:

1. Roger Clemens
2. Greg Maddux
3. Pedro Martinez
4. Tom Glavine
5. Zack Greinke

I somehow never saw Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Kevin Brown, Mike Mussina, Justin Verlander, or Roy Halladay pitch in person, despite me attending 20+ ballgames per year during these pitchers prime. All of them have higher career WAR than Zach Grienke, the 5th on my list.

Personally, Pedro Martinez impressed me more than Maddux or Clemens. He is probably the single most impressive pitcher I ever witnessed in my life. But the stats tell me I'm wrong.

FWIW, Mark Buehrle is 64th overall in career WAR for pitchers. He is ahead of such luminaries as Bret Saberhagen, Eddie Cicotte, Mordecai Brown, Mariano Rivera, Max Scherzer, Sandy Koufax, Early Wynn, Billy Pierce, etc.
