Uniform contest 1981 (Thread Bump from Jan 2011)

Hello,

Does anyone have any info at all- anything- about that contest the White Sox ran in 1981 to submit uniform ideas? There were all sorts of crazy ideas.

For one, I thought there was an article on it here- can't find it.

Secondly, any other info would be appreciated.

I'm doing a research project.

It's like someone put in the 70s era Houston Astros, Montreal Expos, Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres uniforms in a blender and this was the result!

Do you remember how voting worked? Any detail would be great... as I said its a research project.

I remember thinking all of them were ugly and I was only 10 years old.

It was a long time ago and I was pretty young, but I seem to remember there being a card that you filled out - and I believe you could do it multiple times. Funny, I remember thinking there were some cool ones. I remembered wrong.

There were very different concepts of cool back in 1981.

I remember they gave away ballots at the ballpark, similar to All-Star ballots. I remember filling one out and they offered a write-in comment. My write-in comment was to bring back the 1959-era black/red uniforms. I think the local papers also included some ballots to mail in.

I was pushing retro before retro was cool!

I was 11 years old, I voted for #5, the Astros look alike. Still one of my favorite uniforms of all time. No matter how ugly it is.

I have the original color voting handout somewhere.

I remeber watching a game on TV, and they showed the finalists, like in the above photo. I remember it being a night game later in the '81 season, after the strike. Good Lord, that was 30 years ago!

I don't remeber if there was anyway for TV viewers to phone in a vote, or if we were expected to mail in our entry.

The funny thing is that they would have been better off keeping the uniforms they had instead of the one that replaced it.

I didn't mind the '87-'90 uniform change, I just would have changed the hat from a "C/E" to the Sox batter logo.
