With Soxfest coming next weekend, maybe this is the week the White Sox make a big trade. It seems like they always did something right before Soxfest in the past.

Every team has weaknesses and question marks, but the White Sox have a lot more than your average contending teams.

Can we honestly be called a contending team?

I think we're on the cusp of contending. Losing AJ's career year production hurts, but I think Keppinger solidifying the #2 hole makes the top of this lineup much more productive.
A fast start may drive ticket sales, allowing the Sox to be buyers at the deadline, perhaps for an impact bat. A slow start may put the Sox in position to be sellers; their veteran relievers in particular may bring prospects in return.

I know the consensus seems to be that we need a LH bat off the bench. I would rather have a RH hitting outfielder that could give De Aza a day off against tough lefties. We already have a LH hitting OF on the bench (Wise and perhaps Danks).

Well, our pitching should be a pretty above average overall, assuming everyone is healthy. That alone is going to keep us in the divisional race.

IMO, we need a LH bat in the lineup who can contribute from the bench if our 6-9 hitters can improve from the last two years.

Yes. We're in the AL Central.

We spent over 100 days in first place last year and are bringing back mostly the same team as last year so yes, I'd say we are contenders. However, we are fortunate to play in the division we play in.

We spent 100 days in first because Detroit slept for a good part of the season. I wish I shared your enthusiasm and I hope I am wrong, but we haven't added anything to increase our odds over last year. Keppinger isn't going to push us over 85 wins.

Everyone also forgets Victor Martinez and Tori Hunter are replacing black holes of production in that Tiger lineup (and in Hunter's case, becoming a much better corner OF defender). That lineup and that pitching staff....jeez. It would be a MAJOR disappointment if they didn't win 105 games. It's not a stretch they could break the all time record for victories in the regular season. The only "hole" is that they've got a phenom flame throwing youngster primed to be their closer. And to be perfectly honest, there isn't a reliever on our roster I wouldn't trade straight up for him. If we're a contender, its for the wild card only. Unless we seriously address our lineup issues. Like by signing Michael Bourne, for starters. |
