Lou Piniella tried using Don Mattingly at third base in 1986 during a series against the Seattle Mariners. Mattingly became the first left-handed throwing third baseman since Mike Squires (the player, not the former WSI poster) in 1984. The first time it happened was out of necessity, but Lou decided to stick with it for an additional two games.

Well, you've got to find a way to squeeze Pasqua in the lineup, don't ya? I mean, you could stick him in the OF, but then you'd have to put Claudell Washington on the bench.
In that first game after he ended up moving over to third, Mattingly started the game's only double play. I can imagine Pineilla's wheels starting to turn at that point.

Methinks I'm missing something here.
