I'm ok with Phegley or Flowers as a back-up, but that's it right now. I've been after a solid catcher prospect for a year and begging for us to acquire one/invest a high draft pick in one. That hasn't happened, and we are suffering at that position dearly for it.

I'm not sure what we have to do this offseason, but we either have to acquire someone with talent or bring in a rental while we develop one.

Maybe Flowers had this problem all year, but he probably knew that this was his only shot to stick in the majors.
As for what we do about catcher going forward, signing a stopgap guy might be the best option, even though the market is pretty lousy. There just aren't that many good catchers out there. I would prefer a veteran who knows how to bring along some of our young starters.

No, but there are names on that list that would be an upgrade over Flowers. The Sox need a catcher, and I'd be willing to live with a veteran stopgap. McCann is the only long-term solution on that list, and well, he'll probably command more than the Sox will be willing to pay.

My opinion is only one of the hundreds of the Sox' remaining fan base, but you seem to think a professional sports team is above the opinions of its fans. You go ahead and accept 2013, your privilege. I think there is no good excuse for it.

I doubt that the loss of AJ by itself caused a 30-game swing, but I think it entirely possible that the leadership vacuum it created made the difference between a respectable (Of course the Sox don't need my respect.) season and an embarrassing one. If you are OK with it, fine.

Dioner Navarro has had a nice year as backup for the cubs the last time I checked (although that was a long time ago). I'd take him as a stopgap while they develop Alex Jackson.

The timeline is key, but it sounds like at the very least the Sox failed to do due diligence on the extent of Flowers' injury before deciding to let AJ go. Major screw-up with major consequences.
Was Flowers hurt last November/December? Because AJ didn't sign with Texas until late December. So unless Flowers was hurt at that time this is nothing more than bitching just to bitch.

This wasn't a hard move to figure out. Pierzynski only has a few years left and the Sox weren't contending with him. They had a few catchers in the system that needed to get a look.

They both look like bums, but the Sox had to move forward. Everybody should be OK with the Sox looking towards the future.

The present is ugly.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia is a name on that list that intrigues me. He is an offensive upgrade over what we have. The fact that he is a switch hitter is a bonus. However, I haven't personally seen him catch enough games to get a gauge on what kind of defense he plays. Also, given the thin catching market, it could take a lot of money and years to sign him.

The Sox should just blow their wad on McCann and that Cuban firstbaseman and call it a day.

On CSN, it was reported that Flowers started feeling the pain about a year ago but DID NOT TELL ANYONE until last week. He wanted to play through it because of the opportunity being presented to him. What "due diligence" did the Sox fail to perform? If were Flowers, I might have done the same thing given that the Sox would have signed someone to be the starter in my place for 2013 if there was a question about my shoulder.

I look forward to his rant about Konerko not being back next season.

At least Konerko is being a team player and having a miserable contract season so there really is no way anyone could clamor for him to return. AJ still being an instigator.
