But, as you say, it looks like these concerns are taking care of themselves.
They traded Rios and Peavy, two productive players with reasonable contracts for next season. If they wanted to take another shot with this core in 2014, they would have kept those two players.
Trust me, they're rebuilding. They just aren't going to come out and say it like the Cubs, nor should they.
