??? If that's what the Sox are "hoping" for, then they need to aim higher.

Anyway, here's a write-up from Sickels:

Quote:
Nieto was a fifth round pick in 2008 from high school in Plantation, Florida. The 24 year old catcher was considered a disappointment for most of his career, but he performed well in '13 with a .285/.373/.449 line in 110 games for High-A Potomac. He threw out 33% of runners and has reasonable receiving skills. He has no experience above A-ball but catchers who can field their position and have a chance to hit are in short supply.

July 6, 2012 - 7 years later he's still part of it...

It makes sense considering our catching situation...going for some upside here. The guy's been injured a lot, had an excellent year last year when finally healthy and an excellent AFL season.
The roster will be tight...maybe....not sure Flowers and Phegley are performing much better than high A themselves.
I like this pick a lot.
We should be a lot better in 15 and 16...right when the Tigers' pitching rolls off their roster.

Agree. Unlikely he makes the Opening Day roster. If Nieto looks promising during Spring Training, we can always attempt to work out a trade with Washington in lieu of offering him back.

I'd agree with that. It's just the only sense I can make out of it.

Nieto's name apparently appears on the Biogenesis documents.

Interesting... If he's hit with a "strike-two" suspension, usually 100 games, that might work out for the Sox who'd only have to then keep him on the big league roster after the suspension, for the last two months.

Not gonna happen, the MLB said his name appeared on docs in the time frame preceeding his positive test and suspension. It's their "aha" moment they can use to pretend their testing program actually works.

People in Washington expect to get him back. He's not considered major-league ready here...but I suppose the very purpose of the Rule V draft is so teams can be proved wrong about whether their own prospects are major league ready.
