Default Iglesias on DL for AWHILE

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10...-shin-injuries

Detroit SS Jose Iglesias will apparently be on the DL until at least the All-Star break, if not the whole season.

Boy...does this look bad for Detroit. They didn't sign Jhonny Peralta, and they gave the Sox Avasail Garcia for Iglesias. Now they're in a bind at SS....and if they sign the best remaining free agent SS in Stephen Drew, they have to give up a first-rounder to the Red Sox. The Tigers could be stuck here.

Also, this could give us a bit more of a chance to contend...

If he's been playing with fractures in both legs that they assumed were shin splints, someone on the Tiger's medical/training staff has a lot to answer for. If he's only out until mid-season, they should count themselves lucky.

If we weren't making a pretense to contending, maybe we could eke a couple of prospects out of trading them Alexei.

Please, their window of opportunity is now. There is no way they worry about that 1st round pick in signing Drew. He'll be there before the end of the week.

Shin splints and stress fractures would present pretty similarly, I'd cut them some slack.

Good time to showcase Alexei, move him, and get more prospects.

If I'm Rick Hahn, I'm eying James McCann pretty closely right about now.

That said, I don't think they want to trade Alexei right now, and I agree with whoever said that Drew will be in their camp by the end of the week.

This really hurts Detroit but this is too bad for baseball too. It was a lot of fun to watch Iglesias play defense last year.

Funny that Stephen Drew has averaged about 100 games a year or so for as long as I can remember. And he's looking to cash in big (after rejecting a qualifying 14.1 mil offer).

Good luck, Detroit.

I'm sure you'd be saying that if it were, say, Abreu. If there's a fracture in each leg, it's hard to imagine how they both could have escaped notice.

Actually, I would. First of all, do you even know that a fracture is the problem? I haven't seen anything that says they know what the problem is, which is why he's seeing a specialist. Either way, a stress fracture isn't the same thing as a standard fracture. It would come from repetitive use and stressing the shin past what it is capable of withstanding. He would be complaining of shin pain likely in the same way as if he were dealing with tendinitis in his anterolateral leg muscles, or shin splints. They would likely treat him conservatively and see how he responded, which they did. He didn't respond to it so they went with a specialist.

Detroit also let Omar Infante and Ramon Santiago go over the winter. Both of those two are better options than what they currently have to play shortstop.
