This is scary. With pitchers throwing harder and harder and the use of maple bats, it's easy to see a day when someone eventually gets killed. The thing is, I'm not sure what (if anything) MLB can do to avoid that.

Get well, Aroldis. Hate to see this happen to anybody.

If that didn't kill Chapman, I don't know what it's going to take; he throws as hard as anyone in the game and that ball was lined straight back at his face. He didn't even lose consciousness.

There is little you can do, I imagine, to prevent something like this, short of putting a BP-style cage in front of the pitcher. It's part of the risk of baseball.

I don't know how a guy could ever pitch again after having had that happen. Every time I threw I would be flinching thinking it was coming right back at me.

Same thing on the other side of the fence. How can a hitter stand up there again and focus on hitting a fastball after he has been drilled in the helmet or face.

Mr. Chapman is going to have a permanent metal plate in his head. Mild concussion, but no other brain or eye injuries.

If you want to keep a guy from dying on the field, you have to have pitchers wear a helmet that covers the temples. The first guy to get a comebacker in the temple is the first guy to die. Nobody's going to walk away from one of those.

I honestly think something like this will be required in the future.
