You are right, it is just in September. A link to the changes next year.

Isn't a considerable amount of his value tied to his high caliber of defense at third though? Seems like you'd be a tossing a fair amount of the contract down the drain, although with that kind of bat could still be worth it.

Yes, but he's not that rangy and he'll be moving somewhere eventually. If I'm the manager then I'm giving third to the younger player.

One thing that does give me pause re: Cole or any other top FA is that by any account both Harper and Machado are having disappointing seasons. Jerry could easily be patting himself on the back right now and feeling validated in his reluctance to make a big splash.

For everyone who is salivating that an 8 year deal for Cole is worth it, I have two words:

Houston. Street.

Two others:

Barry. Zito.

IMO if you do that deal, you do it assuming you're eating the back 2 years at least, but that flags fly forever and doing so gives you a substantial shot at winning one in the first 4 or so years of the contract (as good a shot as anyone else).

(Which would be an argument to spread the cost over fewer years, but depends on the organization's risk/cost tolerance and whether they prefer riskier long-term payments or higher but lower risk payments.)

One guy gives you all that?

Adding Machado and Tatis garnered San Diego three wins over the Sox as of today. Money well spent!

It is certainly an exception to the rule when a SP lives up to that big contract. However, it’s also a rule that these teams winning World Series rings are always adding veteran aces with big $ from outside their org.

When all it costs you is money, you do it for the right guy. I think Cole is, but I’m no Zoltar.

I hope the NBCSC deal is as lucrative as it should be going forward, but we need the Bulls to do their big part here soon. That is just bonus money for our payroll to add those guys.

Apparently there was a thing on Twitter last week about JD Martinez opting out of his deal with the Red Sox and getting signed by the White Sox.

Rendon causing a firestorm in DC by criticizing fans for not showing up to the ballpark. I think we can cross him off the list of free agents who might come here.

I heard the guys on MLB Tonight talking about this last week. They all also said that they think Mookie Betts will go from the Red Sox to the White Sox when his contract is up after the 2020 season. I have no clue where they are getting these ideas from though.

One guy at a critical position that happens to be the position where you don't have someone with a pretty good shot at being good to great? Yeah.

Obviously a team with just Cole doesn't do anything. A team with Cole-Giolito-Cease-one of Lopez/Kopech and a #5 starter, and that rolls out a daily lineup with Abreu-Madrigal-Anderson-Moncada-McCann-Eloy-Robert and a replacement caliber RF(Leury/Engel) and DH (Collins/Vet FA) does.

No one is saying you don't still need the other guys to continue to develop, we are talking about the impact of a single guy at the top of the rotation, I think that's hard to understate particularly given the way the team is currently set to be constructed.
