Default Sox Current Payroll 1/14

Spotrac has the Sox current payroll estimate for 2020 at $118M.

Still lots of room to play with if they can find guys who will improve the team to sign or trade for.

There’s definitely a few one-year deal guys left that I wouldn’t mind seeing as depth for MI and OF beyond Garcia, Engel and Mendick.

For all the hate on antics and a featherweight bat, Sanchez is a quality utility glove and I wouldn’t argue with that move.

Who is everyone’s “one signing” (not trades) to cap things off?

Players who would accept minor league deals. I think the major league roster is full and the 40-man is pretty close.

Sanchez would be an ideal utility IF if he doesn’t get a better offer, but all they really need is a Goins/Rondon type to stash in Charlotte.

And the Charlotte pitching staff is pretty thin. Nova, for the price Detroit paid, would have been a good signing - but really anyone better than Detwiler (or even better than Fulmer, who I think is worse than Detwiler) would help.

The idea was posted in another thread, but with the Donaldson signing I’m coming around to the idea that we at least ask the Royals what they would want in exchange for Soler and Duffy. If they’d take a package of our secondary prospects, I think I’d pull the trigger.

I am actually surprised this hasn't happened already. But I'm sure Sanchez is going to explore every possible avenue before he comes back at reduced pay. For the Sox part, it will have to be the right amount or money or why bother?

Ben Zobrist would be a guy I'd like to have.

Keeps the seat warm for when Madrigal is ready, and then he can be platoon in RF with Mazara.

It's a nice idea, and he would be a good mentor for Madrigal, but he had a sub-.700 OPS last year. Only 150 PAs though - was he injured?

Only if someone can teach him to breathe through his nose...

Some sort of ugly divorce with the County singer wife.

Hell no. We are not in our window yet and Soler/Duffy don’t make a difference. Save the prospects and cash for better players.

OK. Use the 2020 cash to buy some more prospects by taking on some 1-year bad deals instead.

The Phillies, Mets, Rockies, Cardinals, Cubs, Diamondbacks, and a slew of other teams would love nothing more than to cut costs in 2020

Whenever I read your "good prospects + bad contracts" trade proposals (which I always enjoy) it reminds me of what the Blackhawks have had to do to dump salary to get under the cap (e.g. Bickell AND Teuvo to Carolina).

It’s definitely more common in the NBA and NHL because of the salary cap, but it is happening a little more often in MLB nowadays.
