Delmonico can play 1st. Palka has 1st base experience early in his minor league career.

What a refreshing way to win a game instead of watching another Home Run Derby affair.

I was thinking the same thing last night. It's nice to feel confident that you got a guy there who can lock down a hard fought game. So far, that trade has worked out well. Colome comes out there and throws strikes with a great 4 seam/cutter mix that misses a lot of bats. He really anchors the bullpen.

Colome is impressive, but Juan Minaya saved nine in 10 opportunities in the last six weeks or so of the 2017 season, and won a game where he shut down a game-tying rally and pitched a scoreless ninth after the Sox took the lead in the top half of the inning. Minaya isn't nearly the pitcher Colome is, but even relievers who are have streaks when they're up and streaks when they're down.

Billy Koch had never had 44 saves the season before he came to the White Sox. All but the elite closers, and a few of those, have had roller coaster careers. It's not a position that projects into the future like a position player or even starting pitchers.

Of course, any team in a 2-3 tie at home with runners at first and third and one out in the bottom of the eighth will play for the one run even if they don't have a reliable closer.

Palka played 1B 4 years ago at Visalia (A+)- I think if the White Sox thought he had any chance to be in the mix at 1st- they would have given him playing time there at Charlotte, Chicago or in spring training- which they haven't.

Can Delmonico play 1st? Yes.

Can he play it well? Not really- and the Sox must think the same thing- he's a great guy, with a decent bat who couldn't handle 3rd base- they have put him completely in the outfield to sink or swim- with a total ~25 appearances at 1st since 2017.

But another big picture (maybe medium) is that after a 2-6 start, the team has played about .500 ball (technically 18-16). And that's with little to no contributions from Eloy, the Santana/Banuelos crapfest slot, and some equally craptastic outings from Nova. Offset a bit by some good Rodon outings.

Overall I think there's more likelihood that the team plays better with better options for the #5 SP, Eloy returning (and starting to hit more), and continued production from what was the Palka ofer slot. That's a great sign that a .500 year is in play which would be huge.

Of course, the guys listed at the top are what matters, but if they maintain r improve their overall performance to date and the team is .500, that's going to be Gold Jerry, Gold.
In fairness to Moncada, one of his outs was a screamer to left. Even when he goes Ofer, he's still making excellent contact more often than not.

Palka and/or Delmonico are fill ins, maybe 20 games. And they are not filling in for a gold glove 1st baseman.
