Default *OFFICIAL* What Toys Does Santa Bring Sox Fans? Offseason Moves Part 2

Voodoo said to start a new thread; Iím happy to oblige.

I think adding Wheeler, and Hamels on a one-year deal (maybe with an option for a second year), would turn the rotation into a strength.

I realize that his appearance on the NBC Sports White Sox Talk Podcast with Chuck Garfien was pure marketing, but it struck me that Hamels was instantly likable and he had a legitimate explanation for his post-injury (left oblique) struggles in 2019.

I think heís a candidate for a rebound performance in 2020 and could hold a spot in the rotation with competence at least until Kopech returns, if not until perhaps Rodon or even Dunning might be ready to contribute.

Hamels is about to turn 36 and hasn't pitched 200 innings in a season since 2016. In my mind, he's a candidate for some quick regression. I'm okay with him as a supplementary piece but not the main get. It's why this team sorely needs a pitcher like Wheeler, Cole, or Strasburg. I think if we can land Wheeler we should also be prepared for an overpay.

I know he has way more "miles" on his arm, but I'd rather get MadBum over Wheeler.

I honestly do not understand the love for MadBum around here. I think that's a way more risky signing than Wheeler.

That seems to be the general consensus in the industry, too. The Athletic has had some great reads on this stuff lately.

All about perspective as well. If he's our "Big haul" then yes I'm disappointed. If we land Wheeler and then can get him for 3-4 years at a decent price as a back end innings eater while we have the rest of the rotation locked inexpensively, then sign me up. Would prefer him at 3-4 years to 2-3 of Cole Hammels.

If at all, hamels should be no more than one year with a club option. Hes a 36 year old.

Got 18m in a one year deal from braves. Glad that wasnt here.

Now that Wheeler is off the market, do we target Strasburg or Cole? I think if we donít land one of the bigger FA starting pitchers, or make a big splash in the trade market, we may be looking at last off-season all over again.

I put the chances of the Sox getting one of those two pitchers at 5%.

Yeah, we'll be bargain shopping at Steinmart again for leftovers.

The rest of the guys aren't what they need (except for the 2 they have no chance of getting).

That doesn't matter. Offer $25 million more if you have to for someone of Wheeler's caliber! [Do I really need to put that in teal?]

I think you do, because if you didn't mention that at the end I wouldn't have realized you were being sarcastic. There are some on this board who believe Wheeler is worth a lot more than he got.
