Is he an all-star? Of course not, but those results certainly don't match the ongoing, over-the-top outrage at the trade to acquire him.

Cherry picking his best starts also doesn't invalidate the point. There's a lot of better guys than Nova who were available making less money. Even if you don't mind him in the rotation, it's fairly obvious he's a misuse of resources based on comparisons.

Looking at 5 out of his last 6 starts is not "cherry picking".

He's averaged 4 Ks per 9 in his 5 good games. He's a fifth starter if he pitches well (but he doesn't always pitch well, so thus the 6.52 ERA and 1.64 WHIP). You don't need to pay $9 million for that, but at least he usually pitches like a fifth starter. Which is more than one can say for Jay, Alonso and Santana. Had that money been used seriously, instead of on a dog and pony show, then, who knows?

I think Vaughn should get some professional at bats before we start penciling him in as our starting first baseman. I still have a lot of questions about Collins too.

I think there is a lot of good news out of the first half so far: Moncada and Anderson look legit, even though Moncada had a rough May, he's been hitting .381/.435/.643 over the past two weeks. Even Eloy, who has struggled a LOT, has been coming around the past two weeks. Giolito is now the best pitcher in baseball. There's some good news with Robert, Madrigal and Cease down on the farm too.

The bad news is the pitching. Rodon is gone, Lopez looks lost and who knows what will happen with Kopech and Dunning.

The next few weeks will be a real test for the team though, they've shown they can beat up on bad teams (which is good! Good teams are supposed to do that!) and they did actually hold their own against Houston in May. But, we'll see how good these guys really are in a bit here.

In the long term, I still have a lot of questions about Renteria as a manager and the front office's ability to put together a consistently winning team.

"Clown show" is a metaphor for contrivance. The Samardzija and Alonso trades were contrivances.
The suggestion, therefore, is to stop the contrivances. If you can't offer market value, offer what you can. If you don't sign the player, put the money into the international market, player development, analytics, etc., younger players released in their arb years that you can get cheaper than their arb value (McCann, Avi from the Rays perspective).
