MLB Writer Picks — The White Sox?!

If he's right, he looks like a genius. When he's wrong, no one will remember or even hold him accountable, especially the way he hedges in his analysis. He also picked the Reds to win the NL Central.

He's pretty much down on the Cubs, Cards, Brewers and every team in the AL Central, and he's not without reason. But teams that look like they will be competitive look better this time of year than teams than the teams that you see as underachievers.

If (big if) the front office actually ponies up for non-middling free agents, it's not too far fetched. Detroit and KC are very bad. Cleveland might sell off their good players. The Twins probably won't be as good next season.

It certainly is possible but the probability depends on who we add via FA or trade, the healthy return of Kopeck, and the continuing development of our young players.

Hold him accountable for what, exactly? He states he's not confident in anything and that things will change that will make his "predictions" look wrong. I take this as just something fun to do that sparks a conversation, not something to be taken seriously and then be held accountable (whatever that means) for making a goofy prediction in November.


Lighten up and have fun. Some of you take this stuff way too seriously.

I mean, if we sign Strasburg and another starter for the backend like Keuchel...and then fill our right field hole with Castellanos, sign Ozuna or Encarnacion to DH, and pickup Grandel to catch...yeah, I can see a path.

I get that the popular thing is to say the Twins will regress...but they're bringing back the same offense that slammed their way to a ton of victories last year and they've got almost no financial commitments with intent to be a player on multiple starting pitchers that would represent a significant upgrade over what they had last year. I'm not saying it's impossible for us to beat the Twins next year...but the Twins are going to be a powerhouse in the short term. We are going to need high level contributors from top to bottom to beat them.

This guy just wants to get Sox fans on message boards bent out of shape......and there's no better way to do that than to pick them to win the division.

Hold him accountable was too big a term to use. It will only be taken seriously if the White Sox and Reds win their division or seriously contend. As I wrote, he really doesn't have anything to lose by predicting that the White Sox or Reds have a shot at winning their divisions. It isn't like people are going to get back with him in next November and ridicule him for his projections. He hedges anyway. But if the White Sox and Reds do win their divisions, the column comes back to make him look to give him serious credibility.

Of the predictions in the tabloids at the beginning of the year, the only ones you are likely to remember at year's end are the one that could be considered prophetic.
