Default RIP Tyler Skaggs

Terrible news out of Texas, the Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs has died at the age of 27. The game between the Rangers and Angels has been cancelled tonight.

Awful news. Way too young to go. RIP Tyler.

So sad, just coming into the prime of his life. May he rest in peace.

Heard it on WMVP on the way home from work. It was noted that in 1978, the day after Angels outfielder Lyman Bostok was shot and killed while visiting family in Gary, the Sox and Angels played their regularly scheduled game.

Times have indeed changed.

Yeah, I was there for both the Saturday and Sunday games. The Sunday game was eerily quiet.

Fun fact: Skaggs was involved in the three-team trade that sent Adam Eaton to the White Sox.

So sad, and reminiscent of the Darryl Kile situation in Chicago a number of years back. RIP Tyler, you will be missed.

Nick Adenhart in 2009 (car crash) and now this. Tragic.

Sounds like they do not believe this was self inflicted.

Really sad story, this kid had loads of potential and and was putting together his healthiest season to date.

Canceling the game was considered, but baseball didn't have the luxury of rescheduling it. Bostock was killed on a Saturday night in late September. The Angels hadn't been eliminated by the Royals in the AL West (two divisions, no wild cards). It was the last home game of the season for the Sox, who who were headed for a season-ending west coast roadtrip Monday night against the A's. It would have been a logistic mess. Canceling the game would have deprived the White Sox of a Sunday afternoon gate. With the Sox well out of contention and competing with the Bears, no doubt, they only drew about 12,000 anyway.

Of course, the Angels won behind Nolan Ryan.

Among the fan appreciation things Veeck has scheduled was entertainment from Max Patkin, the Clown Prince of Baseball, who did a lot of minor league games and later appeared in the movie Bull Durham. Max Patkin was canceled.

I don't know that times have changed as much as it's more convenient to reschedule the game after Skaggs' death.

There was the Thurman Munson plane crash in 1979. Anybody know if the Yankess played their regularly scheduled game the next day?

They didn't cancel a Friday night game at Yankee Stadium in a pennant race against the first-place Orioles, and they probably wouldn't under similar circumstances today. More than 50,000 fans showed up for what turned out to be a tribute to Thurman Munson. The story below is Jerry Narron's perspective.

Rescheduling the game never occurred to me at the time. But I'm guessing it would have upset fans who needed to show their respect to Munson. Every situation is different.
