I think they'll go 6-man rotation to end the year, but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of turning Covey into a high-powered reliever. He's a fastball/slider/curveball pitcher (no changeup), and given that he already throws 94/95, the 1-2 MPH velocity bump you usually see upon moving to the pen would make that repertoire look a whole lot more dangerous. Long story short, his stuff seems like it fits the profile of guys like Swarzak or Brad Hand that really turned it on after leaving the rotation.

Covey throws a straight change and a split change that moves. Nasty, nasty stuff when he's right.

Just got a ticket in 132 on the Sox website, plenty of 100 level tickets on there.

Weather now says 15% chance of rain.

I'm no weatherman, but it looks like sprinkles/showers right before and then after the game. Things can change, but it looks like a perfect window that'll not only get the game in, but prevent a delay that would cut Kopech's start short.

I think this pregame is kind of overdoing it. Just let the kid pitch.

The rain may be the best thing to happen to him.

Right decision to pull him. I feel for all the fans at the game though that went to see his debut and only got 2 innings out of watching him pitch.

I knew as I was writing it that I was jinxing it and rain would come out of nowhere. Lo and behold.

Anyway, Kopech looked electric, although way too much reliance on the heater. His off speed stuff looked fantastic; should have let him drop the hook on more of those two strike counts.

I missed most of his start, but saw one of his changeups he threw tonight and it looked filthy. If he can find some sort of consistency with that, he looks to be a good comp to Strasburg.

Here is a detailed analysis of Kopechís debut.

His spin on the fastball tonight was unreal. Even at 96-98 it's probably an 80 grade pitch. And of course we know he can pump it up to 100-102 at times.

It's gonna be a fun few years and things shake out and some of these prospects start turning into stars.

That is a very cool blog that I've never seen before. Thanks for sharing.

Living in Japan, the games are on at the beginning of my work day; I can listen, but can rarely watch, so I hadn't seen much footage of Kopech's outing. Loved the opportunity to see a number of his pitches. And my goodness, it's been a long time since I've seen an umpire punch out a hitter as emphatically as emphatically as CB Bucknor punched out Mauer to end the 2nd. That was a pleasure to watch. (Not saying I don't like Mauer, he's a class act. Just fun to see.)
