I will remind everyone again that Ivan Nova is right there on the open market!

Hopefully Bum, I guess.
Reports are the White Sox offered same years and more money.

Interesting to see where the Sox go from here. Do they pivot to Bumgarner? Sort term deal for Keuchel? Trade for Robbie Ray? Take a risk on Ryu?

Sox Twitter is about to jump off a cliff. Amazing how when guys like Wheeler and Martinez no longer are available, people declare the rebuild a bust.

I want no part of Ray. Heís lost a lot of velocity and he just isnít durable.

Like with Machado, they needed to be the highest bidder by a wide amount.

I wouldn't say he's lost "a lot" of velocity, looks like just 1 tick. His strikeout rate hasn't suffered as a result either. He walks a bit too many for my liking, and isn't an ace, but might be worth looking into. As far as durability goes, he isn't a 200 innings guy, which few are these days, but has the ability to go 170 innings which is valuable.

I’ve watched it live the last three years. He used to hit 98, regularly working the mid 90s. Now he occasionally touches 94 and features a low 90s FB.

He’s hit 170 IP twice in his entire career.

After tax rates, Philadelphia technically had the better offer by a smidge.

If the Phillies were at $118 million, the White Sox should have at a minimum been at $130 million. You don't outbid by pennies. The front office's sheer misperception of how the rest of the league views this team strikes again.

Thought you were referring to just from '18 to then '19's velocity.

Only been up in the bigs for 4 full seasons. 3 of 4 were 162 innings and higher, and his first partial year pitched over 170 innings combining AAA starts. So I don't see a big durability issue.

But yes, seems like velocity is down a bit from like 3 years ago.

This doesn't have anything to do with how the rest of the league views the White Sox. Wheeler's fiance apparently wanted to live near where she grew up in NJ. Not much you can do about that.

And no, this does not mean that the Sox are a cheap organization not willing to pay the price for premier free agents. There is a limit that they're willing to spend for any player - that doesn't make them cheap, especially if that limit is more than any other team is willing to spend (which is reportedly the case here). If Wheeler told the Sox that he's only willing to sign with them for $200M, and the Sox don't pay that, it doesn't mean the Sox are "not willing to do what it takes to win".

I'm assuming that the "win" in this context means winning the offseason. Otherwise, your point is well taken.

I'm fairly confident $12,000,000 would do something about that.

I agree $200 million would be overkill and wouldn't want them paying that. I don't think they needed to go that high. But I think they could have comfortably gone to 5/$130 million or even 6/$130 million without it being the end of the world.

Iím not just making **** up, every dbacks fan has witnesses what I have in person and on TV.

Itís not down a bit, weíre talking about him losing nearly 5 MPH off his max. Like I said, Iíve witnessed it happen in real time as have all the Dbacks fans down here. That fan base would love to get something of value for him after watching him lose ďa tickĒ every season the last few years while getting hit really hard.
