Sure, but giving Wheeler 6 years coming off an ERA close to 4.00 in the NL would be a huge overpay and would be reckless.

They obviously have a better idea than anyone on here what their payroll is roughly going to look like 5-6 years from now. Though the real window seems to be 2020-2023 based on Moncada, Giolito and Grandal contracts. Maybe he just says **** it and goes for it then.

Taking Lowrie’s 1/$12 and Familia’s 2/$10.667 (2020); $16.667 (2021); $2 deferred (2022) should be able to land Dominic Smith, Brett Baty, and a halfway decent pitching prospect. Then turn around and flip Smith for more pitching.

Absorbing $22.667/$16.667/$2 to replenish a farm system that will nosedive in the rankings after the top 4 prospects all graduate seems like a good idea to me.

I mean, isn't that the point? If we've learned anything over the past few years you're not getting marquee free agents by being fiscally responsible. The Sox have positioned themselves well enough to absorb an over pay or two if it means legitimate contention for the next 4-6 years. Yes we may have to suffer through a year or two of overpaid players and fall out from losing some of our homegrown talent but doing so with another Championship in our pocket would make that easier to swallow.

Wheeler is going to the Phillies. ****.

Passan says 5 years and over $100m.

Oh, well. Guess we're not solving the high-end SP problem this offseason.

"Just under $120M" per Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Well, crap. Where do we go from here? Ryu and/or MadBum?

Hamels to the Braves on a 1-year deal, if anyone missed that and cares.

Unless they go for broke on Gerrit Cole, probably not. They can still grab a couple of veterans which, while not a long term solution, will help for the immediate future.

C is solved. Still need a viable RF and some OF depth.

Well, ****. JR really doesn't like paying free market price on pitchers.

Hopefully Bum, I guess.

It seems unlikely that the Sox will be in on Cole or Strasburg, but I wouldn't mind them signing MadBum to be a number three starter. Otherwise, there isn't that much else in the pitching market that I think would be a great fit.

White Sox outbid the Phillies for Wheeler: https://twitter.com/ken_rosenthal/st...060408320?s=21

So this one isn't on the FO.

I'm probably overreacting here because I was really hoping this was one they were going to win but...

It was pretty widely rumored that it was going to take at least 5/100 to get him. It was also rumored that he had one offer of at least that and that. It was also noted at one point that the Sox had the most aggressive offer out there.

All that being said, and after the debacle that was last winter... how are you willing to pay a guy $20 mil per year but not $23-24?

I suppose we will never know and maybe he wanted Philly all along but damnit this is starting to get frustrating.

end rant....

Happy wife happy life. At least the Sox actually offered up the money this time. Hopefully they find another way good way to allocate those funds now. Who that is on I'm not sure.
