People may not have "hatred" for Pods but some are throwing a fit.
Its a freaking minor league deal, with virtually no risk at all.
What is big problem here? If he sucks, they cut him. If somehow he is able to pull of a good year then the Sox win. Why bitch so much?!

I'm all for just seeing how it works out before I make any kind of judgment, but I do see it as low risk.

Best part of signing Scott Podsednik is the potential for fans attending the Cell to get a quick glimpse of Lisa Dergan.

The fit is being thrown at those acting like he's any more viable of an option than Jerry Owens.

Chastise them! They have different opinions on the skill of baseball players!

I don't think any of the two are anything to write home about, lets just see how this plays out.

Hey, at least the Sox brass seems to have equal opinions on guys who have been passed over by all 29 other teams. Go Owens! Go Pods!

Every organization has those type of players.

Seems like people care way too much about this move on both sides. Unless we have a couple more injuries, I doubt Pods will be back in a Sox uniform, so who cares? The 'welcome back' posts can wait until he's actually on the 25-man roster (my guess is never), and the 'waste of time' posts are just typical of WSI after signing anyone to a minor league deal...it's not a 'waste of time', he's just kind of there. It's not like they signed him to take over CF and return to the glory days of a few years ago.

That's the funny thing...

BA
JO
Wise
Pods

They all suck.

One plays better D.

One is faster.

One is less bad in any one area, but less good in all areas

And the other is well past his prime.

Turd #1, Turd #2, Turd #3 and Turd #4...

Four suboptimal options - someone has to play the position.

I'll avoid the arguments about CF, and will sit back and see how this season turns out. Whether it's Podsednik, Owens, Wise, or Anderson, we all know that they're not going to be game changers. Whatever.

Where were you in 07?
Hiding under a rock because our team sucked so bad. In between that, I saw Jerry Owens have a mediocre (at best) season. The only bright spot of '07 was Buehrle's no hitter, Thome's 500th, and the surprise production from Josh Fields. Owens doesn't even make the list.

Because Pods couldn't play CF when he was healthy 4 years ago. He's a bad LF and would be amongst the worst defensive CFs in the game. Why would anyone want him over JO?
Who said anything about him playing CF? I want Anderson to start there with Lillibridge as the emergency backup until Wise is healthy again. I don't disagree at all that Pods would be bad in CF but then again, so would Jerry Owens. **IF** I had Pods on my roster, I'd use him as a reserve corner outfielder/pinch runner. That's it. My opinion is that since both Pods and Owens are bad at defense, if the Sox were to choose between the two, I'd take Pods for offense because he can hit MLB pitching better and (if healthy) knows how to use his speed to steal bases.

Time slips away - and leaves you with nothing mister....
Pods just turned 33 which is only a few years older than Owens. It isn't inconceivable to think he *might* (emphasis on *might*) have a few productive years as a reserve player left in the tank.

Quote:
Did anyone say in this thread that he plays good defense?
Nope. Just thought I'd mention it since some people think speed makes him a better defender than others. (Not accusing you of that though...)

Pods is not doing "bench duty". He is going to Charlotte.
Um, I know he hasn't been named on the MLB roster yet and I know he is going to Charlotte. The whole point of my post was to give an opinion that I'd rather have Pods take the roster spot than Owens. Just an opinion.

That's true...predictions are usually not worth the bandwidth they take up. It's all wild ass guessing.

(almost) Nobody is happy to see JO here. (almost) Nobody was happy to see Wise playing every day. I can't say the same about BA - it seems that this is a difference maker to some. I don't get that...but that's WSI for ya.

We chew every last ounce of fat off of the Owens/Wise/BA CF bone, and at the end of the day, we were arguing over what will amount to amost nothing over the course of a full season. 3 pieces of crap...and just for fun, lets add in Pods to make it 4.
We are in agreement on this quote. Too bad we don't have Grady Sizemore or Torii Hunter out there and we could just sit back and argue about Mike MacDougal or something. Also, and this isn't to pick on you Jabrch, but am I the only one who hates the sentence by sentence post dissection with quotes? I realize it is a WSI tradition since way back but wouldn't it have been easier to just quote my small paragraph and then type a paragraph with your thoughts? When the post is broken up, it pretty much forces me to use the same format to reply to yours. Maybe I'm in the minority...
