Default Tribune lays off Sox beat reporter Chris Kuc

The Chicago Tribune made a series of newsroom reductions today including the lay off of the White Sox beat reporter Chris Kuc. Chris had just been assigned to the White Sox after years covering the Blackhawks. It appears that the Tribune has eliminated the position of White Sox beat reporter. I don’t know if coverage reverts to the columnists (Haugh and Sullivan) on a story by story basis, but it means nobody travels with them or files game stories.

Now I’m one of those people who actually still gets the paper. I pay nearly $900 a year for that luxury. But if they are going to continue to give me less for more, those days are over.

I subscribed to The Athletic last year. I've been happy with the breadth and depth of their Sox coverage (and as a Fire fan, Guillermo Rivera is the best reporter on Fire stuff out there).

This is personally terrible for Kuc, and an outrage that the paper would not have a beat reporter for one of the city’s five major league sports teams.

No beat reporter for the Chicago White Sox: how pathetic. I also feel for Chris Kuc (and his family) who has done great work over the years.

Agreed. Thought he always did well with the Hawks, and in (a seemingly brief?) stint with the Sox.

Kuc has been outstanding so far this year. This is really coincidental, because I was catching up on my reading yesterday and noticed Sullivan had prepared the White Sox column the other day.

This stinks. I didn't really care for Colleen Kane's work, but Kuc has been really good since taking over. It doesn't make a lot of sense also from the perspective that the Bulls and Hawks are struggling and their season is almost over, so a plethora of coverage should be shifting to the Sox in the next two months.

Who said they're eliminating the Sox beat writer position? I've heard nothing of the sort. How do you know they won't give it back to Kane or assign Sullivan? Cool your jets before running with wild speculation, people.

He tweeted that he was in Arizona when it happened. I saw other reporters tweet that there was no advance warning and little communication with people in the newsroom when it happened. The Tribune has been run into the ground and it makes me angry, both as a Chicagoan and as a journalist.

Do the Cubs still have a Tribune beat writer? If they do, something stinks in Denmark.

There's a chance that they might not have one. This could also be the sort of thing where the Tribune will have a new beat writer for the Sox, one who hasn't been around as long as Kuc and thus will work for much cheaper.

The conclusion about the Trib eliminating the Sox beat writer may be semantics at this point. Trying to translate their jargon filled memo on the layoff, they are “flattening” their newsroom, eliminating titles. My bet is that columnists, and other remaining beat writers (think KC Johnson in the off season) will cover multiple beats. The game story (recap and quotes from that day’s game) will probably go away or be sourced from the wires.

It’s just puzzling why the Trib continues to think it can win this digital war by scaling back their product, while true digital entities like The Athletic is eating their lunch. Now whether the subscription only model of the Athletic survives is another matter, but if it doesn’t it’s our own fault.

Agreed. I subscribed to The Athletic about a month ago and really like it -- though let's see how its game coverage is. Sorry to hear about Kuc. Mommas, don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys or journalists.

Yeah, its terrible that the Tribune did this but still the White Sox have been at the bottom in the standings, attendance and TV ratings for years now. Maybe the Tribune feels that most people won't care if they drop the White Sox beat writer. Things like this do happen when a team is "Mired in Mediocrity". Both papers dropped their beat writers the last half of the 1970 season also. (The team lost over 100 games that season) I would like to think that if the team ever has another winning season the Tribune will assign a beat writer to the team. I'm already worried about the next White Sox TV contract which is coming up next year.
