Eloy "demanded" the big bucks from the Sox? Source? What leverage did Eloy have to make such a "demand"?

I thought the debate was about whether or not he would be worth the money.

It does in a way. The first few years of Eloy’s contract are so cheap that even this year’s Abreu would still be worth several times those amounts.

Then he's worth the contract no matter what Abreu he turns into?

Mostly.

The option years would be an overpay, but he’s certainly worth more than the league minimum.

Well he's pretty much already current Abreu who has slumped back down below .800 OPS again. There's a 30 point difference or so but it's minor and Eloy is going to hit better than that going forward.

Light-tower power is less impressive than the ability to make consistent hard line-drive contact.

I am certainly not writing Jimenez off. I am disappointed that he isn't doing better and believe he needs to improve. Maybe you aren't disappointed in Jimenez because you assume he will do do a lot better, even then he only looks like he will meet your expectations. Any White Sox fan who isn't disappointed in Jimenez's offensive start to his career, who doesn't believe he needs to improve is lowering their expectations.

I see potential, but I don't see a player ready for burst onto the major league scene, as Frank Thomas was. Considering that so many people, not least of all Jimenez himself, was saying he was, is certainly a disappointment. If what he is now is what he is next year and the year, my disappointment will grow.

Oh and Eloy just crushed a huge 3-run bomb right before I typed this reply.

I was 13 in 1990. I remember when Thomas came up. He was quite hyped. I knew quite a bit of fans who were upset when the Sox traded Ron Kittle. I told them all, there is someone in the minors named Frank Thomas. He's going to be really good.

If you had the right sources, you knew about stuff. In my case, it was a game program. But, you are correct there was no internet and cable TV was still coming along. Sportschannel was still a 4-midnight program. ESPN showed wrestling, pool, and other stuff during the day.

Right but you were a 13 YO baseball junkie with the right sources. Most people had no idea who Frank Thomas was. Everyone who pays any attention at all knows who Eloy is and has for 2 years.

My point wasn't that Jiminez is a bust. It's far too early to say that, and his numbers are better than "bust." My point was that he was not as major-league ready as a lot of people thought he was, and worrying about making kids with inflated visions of themselves angry is ridiculous.

A 10-5 win over a team in contention doesn't rate it's own thread?
