Half a dozen multiyear deals? Not a chance. That completely sabotages your flexibility to make trades or fill some spots with league minimum salaries.

And one more time for the cheap seats...

Everything will have to go absolutely perfectly next year for it to be a contending season.

Absolutely everything...

We already have the potential for a lot of yuck with guys like Zack Collins, Adam Engel, and Danny Mendick on the bench. If any of them get pressed into everyday duty, then bye bye competing in 2020.
Plus the players we trade right?

Or perfectly this offseason...mainly Gerrit Cole. I know it's extremely unlikely but hey it would go a long way towards the Sox legitimately competing in 2020. But you're right then there are the injuries, down years, bullpen disasters, ect to contend with and you have to avoid enough of them for everything to work out.

The players youíre trading wonít be of much consequence for that kind of salary dump.

You also need all the rest of the starters to pitch as well as they have and improve. And all the young kids need to perform at high levels. It's possible, but not likely the Sox will be contenders for a championship in 2020.

I would also be fine with Moose instead of Villar. If Moose came at the same expected Arb salary as Villar for something like 2/$25 with a club option to bring it to 3/$35, that is a much better use of payroll than Yolmer and Leury. Cut bait with those guys, let Madrigal get the starts backing up TA at SS when he arrives in June, and donít wear Grandal down to the nub by making him DH and play 1B too much.

Moose plays 2B until Madrigal gets here, then plays some more 2B when Madrigal plays SS or gets a day off against tough RHP. He plays some 3B when Moncada gets a day off. He plays some 1B when Abreu gets a day off against tough RHP (with that new contract, he does NOT need to be making 160 appearances ever again). He can DH some himself. Maybe he can even play some LF and give us some days of respite from Eloy pretending to be an outfielder.

Assume at least 2 days off per month for each starting position player on the team for June-September, and assume that we want as few of them as possible going to a reserve player like Mendick:

Moose would get ~60 starts at 2B before Madrigal gets here, ~8 starts at 2B when Madrigal gives TA a breather at SS, ~8 starts at 2B to give Madrigal days off, ~20 starts at 3B to give Moncada days off and let him DH 3 times per month, ~28 starts at 1B to give Abreu days off and let him DH 5 times per month. If he could start ~16 games in LF to give Eloy days off and let him DH 2 times per month, that would be great. If not, no big deal. Let Moose DH some games in his own right, and there is plenty of playing time available to get him a starterís workload. That gets a 30 double, 30 homer LH bat into the lineup. Plus, itís a great way to make sure the season doesnít go south if Moncada, TA, Madrigal, Eloy, or Abreu gets hurt.
