Extended spring training, it seems to me, is more like spring training “B” games, plus practice and drills.
My understanding is that all the teams based in AZ have various players that are not playing for the full season, affiliated teams (could be slated to play in the DR, or on a short season team (like Great Falls), or are recovering from an injury, etc.)- those players make up the "extended spring training" group- they are real games being played, but are more like "scrimmages" (there are no standings, or a fixed schedule, etc.)

21 yo, raised his batting average 20 points, and slugging 100 points vs. 2017 while moving up a level to A+....some nice progress.

Didn’t Cashman trade Jose Contreras to us?

And Jose was good for about 18 months. He'll always be remembered fondly b/c of 2005, but it's not like it was the swindle of the century.

He was good for us longer than that. At any rate, I bet Cashman would like to have that one back. More to the point, Cashman has made his share of mistakes. It is too early to tell if Rutherford is one of them.

With as many potential home run hitters the Sox have in the system if Rutherford simply hits .280, plays a solid right field and has gap power with a boatload of doubles, that's fine for me.

No matter how it turns out- it won't be a mistake for Cashman- he traded from a position of excess (outfield talent) and picked up valuable pieces (2 bullpen arms, veteran 3rd baseman) for a pennant run.

Is it possibly to keep Renteria away from them? I've completely lost confidence in the guy.

Do any of you guys attempt to give some over performers playing time in the bigs once rosters expand as a tryout for next season?

For instance, call up Robert, Rutheford, and Basabe to see if they can chop it up at the big level. Or Collins for that matter. If they play well, you can consider them for next season.

Promoting a prospect to Chicago - even in September - requires him to be on the 40-man roster.

Once a player is on the 40-man roster, his MLB service clock is ticking toward arbitration and free agency.

So I guess its possible that anyone already on the 40-man roster, like Basabe, could be promoted. But I doubt that the Sox would move any top prospects like Robert, Rutherford, or Collins, to the 40-man roster just for the purpose of giving them a September tryout.

To me, the reports on Rutherford make me think Ryan Sweeney.
