If you aren't familiar with the rules, this is a nice and concise read:

I'm hoping for us to take a flyer on one of these unprotected relief pitchers.

I'm hoping the Astros didn't give away their first pick to the Padres in the Anthony Bass trade today.
There's a few relievers out there that could help them, and it's not too hard to stash a low inning relief pitcher on the roster all year. |

Adrian Nieto - C
Played well in AFL this year; has not been above advanced A. |

Would have preferred they take a chance on a high upside arm at the end of the bullpen.

Another Cuban player, and a switch-hitter, which is good.
I guess he's the backup this coming year, since it's a pretty big leap for him from high-A. But with Flowers just recently signed and Phegley still on the roster, I don't see how they carry 3 catchers. |

Adrian Nieto is an odd choice.
A catcher who never played above high-A ball and we have to keep him on the big league roster all year. I hope that means he's our backup and we're going to sign/acquire someone better than Flowers or Phegley for our starter... Aw jeez, he got busted for PEDs - it's Flowers all over again. linky Though he did have a good season at Hagerstown post-PEDs. Last edited by russ99; 12-12-2013 at 08:56 AM. |

That's who all the writers have been saying we would pick. We're going to make a second pick, right with only 38 on the 49 man....and we didn't. Figures we might as pitchers are low risk rule 5 players and we could use pen help.

Doesn't the fact that he performed well in the AFL mean he might hold his own in the Show? He couldn't do much worse then our two current backstops...and he sounds like he has waay more potential than both of them put together.

White Sox select Evan Crawford (OF) and Omar Narvaez (C) in the AAA phase, and lose Brady Shoemaker (OF) to the Marlins.

Flowers raked to the tune of .387/.460/.973 in the AFL. It's hardly an indicator of future success.

Taking a low A catcher doesn't seem to make a lot of sense considering we have to carry him on the major league roster all season. Given his lack of production, I doubt he'd even win a backup spot from our other also-rans. My guess is we're hoping to offer him back and have them say no thanks.
